In 2010, in partnership with Inland Fisheries Ireland, IRD Duhallow was awarded funding from the EU LIFE+ Programme targeting the Upper Blackwater. The project aimed to restore the populations of Freshwater Pearl Mussel, Atlantic Salmon, Otter (Annex II species EU Habitats Directive), Kingfisher (Annex I species EU Birds Directive) and a sub-species of Irish Dipper endemic to Ireland. This was achieved through a series of actions aimed at restoring the quality of the river bed and riparian zone. The majority of the on the ground works, project innovations and demonstrations of best practice were aimed at the River Allow catchment area. A detailed overview of the results of these actions will be provided on the 21st of May.
